A Smithfield man wanted for the alleged rape of a 12 year-old girl at a Wayne County charter school has been found dead.
Goldsboro Police had been searching for Richard Omar Knight, 35, of Smithfield since last Thursday. That’s when police were called to Dillard Academy to investigate the alleged sexual assault.
Knight was the principal at Dillard Academy at the time of the criminal offenses. He was immediately suspended from his position.
Monday afternoon, Goldsboro Police announced that a body found in a wooded area in Orange County last Friday afternoon has been identified as Knight. He died from an apparent self-inflicted injury. His body has been sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.
Dillard Academy is a charter school and is not affiliated with the Wayne County Public School system.
