SMITHFIELD – Veterans from Johnston County and the surrounding areas gathered May 9 at American Legion Post 132 in Smithfield to socialize and eat a hot breakfast provided by Carolina Packers. The Veterans Rally Point is an event scheduled in Johnston County on the second Wednesday of each month, and it’s designed to provide opportunities for veterans to learn about organizations that provide much-needed services to the veteran community.

The Veterans Rally Point began in 2018 at McCall’s restaurant in Clayton, NC, and moves to different locations periodically to enable veterans throughout the county to attend at a location closer to their home. The Johnston County Veterans Office, North Carolina Works, the Daughters of the American Revolution, various Ladies Auxiliaries of Johnston County American Legion Posts, and the “We Honor Veterans Program” are all sponsors.

Representatives from outside groups provide briefings in support of veterans with information such as financial planning, employment assistance, and social security benefits (including Medicare options). They also occasionally host representatives from the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and VA Healthcare Services
