Visit To Internet Porn Site Costs Johnston County Man $20,000

JOHNSTON COUNTY – A Johnston County man had $20,000 stolen from his bank account after using his computer to access a pornographic website and falling victim to a scam.

The 66 year-old victim said within minutes of visiting an internet porn site, a popup message appeared on his computer screen alerting him to call a number. He called the number and a scammer, posing as a computer repair technician, claimed there was a virus on his computer. The scammer said if the man paid $699 they would remove the virus and would also provide five years of antivirus software protection.

The victim paid $699 by credit card. A couple of days later, the victim said he received a call from the scammer who claimed they needed remote access to his computer to refund the $699 initial payment.

The victim was instructed to log into his bank account and then provide remote access through his computer to the caller. He unknowingly allowed them direct access to his bank account where they immediately transferred $20,000 out of his account.

The victim waited more than a month to report the incident. Authorities say it is unlikely the money can be recovered.

    • Wow…you folks issuing personal attacks on your neighbor are really showing your true colors. How about trying to live with 1/10th of the compassion you pretend to have? SMH.

  1. What a dumba**- could have donated that money to : St. Judes Children’s hospital, Tunnels to Towers, Wounded Warriors , SPCA and/ or any local ministries. Would have been better off to read the Bible and learn why not to be on those types of websites in the first place.

  2. Mr. JD, I try to only comment on a story that has legs. In this situation I am sure the victim has learned a hard financial lesson. I am sure the loss of financial funds has been a downer for this victim.

  3. Sorry I have been busy explaining to propaganda spewing wanna be authors that defending people who have been targeted with ransomeware and power outage how to best leverage technology for the betterment of humanity and not the detriment. Unfortunately there are people who have zero ethical understanding when it comes to technology, very sad things like this have to be explained to supposed mentally stable adults..

As far as this issue is concerned, there are simple free things that can and should be put in place to protect the theft of funds via data networks. Nobody should be made an example of because of not understanding the power technology offers and possibly removes.

For those that find this as an opportunity to publicly shame people, just imagine for a minute if those that really know the power of technology decided to leverage that power?

You would wish you lived on the front lines in Eastern Europe if that happened.

Easy enough to tell who is ethical and who isn’t, it is also easy enough to tell who has real success in the technology sector and who doesn’t.
