Volunteer Firefighter Discovers Injured Driver After Crash

HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. – A driver was seriously injured after crashing off U.S. Highway 401 south of Lillington and ending up deep in the woods.
The crash was discovered around midnight Monday after a volunteer firefighter traveling along U.S. 401 came across a man lying in the roadway.
The firefighter stopped to check on the individual and located a heavily damaged Ford Fusion passenger car down an embankment and in the woods.

The firefighter immediately radioed for assistance.
Units with Summerville Bunnlevel Fire Rescue, Harnett County EMS, the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
The driver was later transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Authorities believe the driver exited the wrecked vehicle through the sunroof before crawling back to the roadway, where he was later found by the passing firefighter.

The roadway was temporarily closed while troopers conducted the investigation and crews worked to remove the vehicle.
