W. Brooks Matthews Named Harnett County Schools Superintendent

LILLINGTON – During the November Board of Education meeting, W. Brooks Matthews was officially named the Superintendent of Harnett County Schools. A native of Harnett County, Mr. Matthews brings a wealth of experience to the role, having dedicated his entire professional career to the district. He has served as a high school science teacher, coach, assistant principal, athletic director, and principal. In 1998, he was named Harnett County’s Assistant Principal of the Year, followed by Principal of the Year in 2008.

In addition to his work within the district, Mr. Matthews was a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors from 2007-2012, serving as president in the 2011-2012 school year. He has also been serving as Deputy Superintendent of Harnett County Schools and as a Harnett County Commissioner.

Mr. Matthews holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology, a master’s degree in Science Education, and an Ed.S. from N.C. State University, along with an add-on certification in School Administration from Campbell University.

He and his wife, Rosa Maria, live in Buies Creek, with their two beagles and rescue lab mix. They have three children, two of whom are public school teachers, and seven grandchildren.
