Walk To Raise Awareness, Support Mental Health Services Coming To Clayton

CLAYTON, N.C. — Residents will have an opportunity to show their support for mental health awareness during the county’s first-ever NAMIWalk.

NAMI Johnston County announced it will host the inaugural community walk on Saturday, Sept. 26, in downtown Clayton as part of the National Alliance on Mental Illness’s (NAMI) nationwide effort to raise awareness, reduce stigma and support individuals and families affected by mental health conditions.

Organizers say the event is open to everyone, including those living with mental illness, their families, friends, caregivers and community supporters.

According to NAMI, approximately one in five adults experiences a mental health condition each year, and the annual walk is designed to promote understanding while raising funds to support local mental health programs and services.

“This year’s theme, ‘Together We Are NAMIWalks,’ reflects the power of connection and community,” organizers said. “Every step taken and every dollar raised fuels NAMI’s free programs, advocacy, and support services.”

Participants may walk, use mobility devices or simply attend the event in support of the cause.

There is no registration fee to participate, although fundraising is encouraged. Organizers said 100 percent of the money raised will remain in Johnston County to support NAMI Johnston County’s free educational programs, support groups, advocacy efforts and community resources. Participants who raise $100 or more will receive an official 2026 NAMIWalk T-shirt.

NAMI Johnston County was founded in 2007 and is the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by mental illness.

Registration for the Sept. 26 walk is available online at namiwalks.org/namijoconc. Additional information about local programs is available through NAMI Johnston County.
