Wanted Man Captured After Chase From Clayton To Smithfield

CLAYTON — A search for a wanted Wilson man turned into a vehicle pursuit and foot chase Monday morning before police took him into custody in Smithfield.
Clayton Police said officers located 41-year-old Carnelius Gibbs around 9:46 a.m. in the parking lot of a McDonald’s in Clayton.
Gibbs was wanted on felony warrants from Wilson involving embezzlement and fleeing from law enforcement, according to police.

When Clayton officers attempted to stop him, police allege Gibbs struck a patrol vehicle with his vehicle and drove away.
The pursuit continued east on Clayton Boulevard (US 70) toward Smithfield, with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office assisting.
Police said Gibbs eventually stopped in the 300 block of Stancil Street in West Smithfield, got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

Clayton and Smithfield police officers chased Gibbs on foot and captured him a short distance away.
No injuries were reported.
The Clayton Police patrol vehicle sustained minor damage.
In addition to the outstanding Wilson warrants, Gibbs was charged by Clayton Police with felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving, speeding, stop light violation, driving left of center, driving without insurance and operating with a revoked license plate.
