BENSON – A West Johnston High School teacher was arrested today (Monday) after being accused of sexually assaulting a student at the school.
Joshua David Johnson, age 38, of Benson was arrested on two counts of taking indecent liberties with a student.
Major Jeff Caldwell with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said officers received a report on March 27 of a sexual assault at West Johnston High School. It was alleged the chorus teacher, Joshua David Johnson, assaulted a student.
During the investigation the student provided a detailed disclosure of the sexual assault, Major Caldwell said.
According to an arrest warrant, the alleged offense occurred March 24.
Joshua David Johnson is currently being held at the Johnston County Detention Center under a $75,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday afternoon.
In an email Monday afternoon Johnston County Public Schools stated, “Please note that the arrest of Mr. Johnson is a law enforcement ordeal that the district will not address. However, the district will advise that Mr. Johnson is no longer employed with Johnston County Public Schools, effective today, March 31, 2025.”
Thank God my student is homeschooled and away from these predators! This would be her school.
I’m a homeschooled Junior right now but I was in west my freshman year. Keep your kid homeschool and don’t let her go to west. It is horrible, not just creepy teachers but my experience with some students was nuts. 9 times out of ten the halls smelled like weed and other things.
She is finishing up 10th grade now and will not be going to West, no worries. I’m glad you are homeschooled too and were able to get out.
This is like the 12th West Johnston staff member who has been arrested for abusing students. We need an investigation into the whole school!

I don’t know what the story is but my daughter had him for classes last year and this year and he was nothing but professional. He’s loved by many of his students. I really hope this isn’t true.
I believe your daughter and all females are / were safe from this guy. Only victims would be “boys” and (I use that term to identify persons who have male genitalia)…
As a former teacher myself, you must NEVER be alone with a child. Find another teacher or find several students, but you can NEVER be alone with a child. If he is guilty, then the victim and the family of the victim deserve justice.
Treat it like he’s a county commissioner or school board member. He keeps his job until he’s proven guilty in court.
Folks we got our Teacher Union Teacher elected from the Benson area!!! We are now in good liberal progressive hands as far as the Johnston County School Board is concerned. Folks look at how our Johnston County School Board is standing up for DEI and Trans-Students in that last vote to not change the bullying policies. Our new Teacher Union Teacher board member has put the fear of God into the weak Democrats that try to run as conservatives. The proof is in their vote to protect DEI and Trans-Student’s!!! We need more progressive liberals to run for the school board with a mask on until we can get voted in!!! Our Teachers Union Teacher board members is going to save our DEI and Trans-Students from the crazy MAGA and F-Elon Musk and no changes are going to happen here in JOCO!!!

Come on now I am sure there was an investigation before the arrest of this teacher and I agree if you are a teacher always have other staff members around while around students.

Guilty, innocent.. who knows. Bottom line is NEVER put yourself in a situation where you are alone with a student. NEVER. The county will NEVER support you… even if you are not at fault.
I went to WJHS my Freshman year, being home schooled is the best thing to ever happen to me. I’m a Junior right now and honestly I don’t ever wanna go back. So many teachers are just creepy and the students are even worse. West overall is a bad school. To any upcoming Freshmen next year, please be safe and don’t fall into peer pressure.
Maybe you just had a bad time? What do you say to the 1000s that have graduated and had good experiences? Congrats on running away to hide at home, maybe you can stay there forever and never have to deal with real life when things don’t always go your way.
Choosing to leave public school in high school is one of the hardest decisions anyone can make. You should congratulate her for recognizing it was not a good place for her to learn and making a decision to go somewhere that she can learn. We should be encouraging our young students to learn in whatever setting is best for them to be productive members of society in the future.

lmao, I had this teacher before and I remember all the students loved him because he was cool and what not. but honestly I thought he was weird because he would still act as if he was a teenager like hanging out with the class at parks & restaurants, or being too friendly-sometimes it’s like hold on a min. I wouldn’t hang out with them, cause I had too many things to do after school, and i’d be absent a lot so i think that’s why he didn’t really like me but i ain’t like him either so it’s funny seeing this happen- plus i told a couple people what I thought about him. 1 person agreed and the rest thought I was paranoid, or crazy, so again, funny.
