Woman Charged In Smithfield Crash That Killed Husband

SMITHFIELD – A Smithfield woman was arrested following an early morning car crash that claimed the life of her husband.

The State Highway Patrol said it happened at 1:20am today (Thursday) on Cleveland Road near Pine Nut Lane outside of Smithfield.

Trooper D. Waterman reported a 2020 Dodge Charger was traveling north on Cleveland Road when the vehicle ran off the road to the right and struck a ditch. The Dodge overturned several times ejecting the male passenger. The car came to rest in a field.

The driver, identified as Neidy Alejandra Cambran-Culajay, age 30, of Smithfield sustained non life-threatening injuries.

The passenger was identified as her husband, Byron Gonzalez, age 34, of Smithfield.

Gonzalez died from injuries sustained in the single vehicle accident. The Highway Patrol said he was not wearing a seat belt.

Speed and suspected alcohol impairment are believed to be contributing factors, according to the Highway Patrol.

The Dodge Charger had been reported stolen in Apex.

Cambran-Calujay was charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
