Woman Scammed After Being Told She Won $100,000
SELMA – A Johnston County woman lost money after being scammed online. The 65 year-old victim said she was contacted through her Facebook account from an individual claiming she had been selected as the winner of the Money Freedom Program.
The scammer claimed the victim needed to provide $1,000 to cover a processing fee and a portion of the taxes on her winnings. Not realizing it was a scam, the woman went to a local CVS store and purchased two $500 American Express gift cards then texted the card numbers to the fraudster.
The victim never received her winnings.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, if you are asked to pay money, provide personal information, or financial information, to get a prize it is a scam. Scammers frequently use the names of businesses or organizations you recognize and pressure you to act quickly to claim your winnings. The FTC says real sweepstakes are free and by chance.
You can report fraud to the Federal Trade Commission or your nearest law enforcement agency.

Why do people keep falling for these obvious scams? How on Earth can anybody think this is legit?
