Woman Sentenced To Life For Murder Of Her Grandmother

CLAYTON – Four years after a crime that shocked the Clayton community, justice has been served.

On Thursday, October 30, a Johnston County jury found Camille Nechelle Singleton, 31, guilty of first-degree murder in the 2021 killing of her 68 year-old grandmother, Inita Gaither.

Superior Court Judge Thomas H. Lock sentenced Singleton to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The case began on September 30, 2021 when Gaither was found dead inside her home on Crawford Parkway. Clayton Police conducted a welfare check after school officials and family members became concerned when Gaither failed to pick up her great-grandson from school. Officers discovered Gaither deceased from two gunshot wounds.

Investigators quickly identified Singleton—Gaither’s granddaughter—as the suspect. An Amber Alert was issued for Singleton’s 2-year-old son, Dior, who was believed to be with her.

Singleton was later apprehended by South Fulton Police in Georgia, and Dior was found safe. Singleton was later extradited to North Carolina to stand trial.

After four days of testimony, jurors returned a guilty verdict on Thursday, bringing an emotional case to a close.

“The District Attorney’s office is pleased with the verdicts and the sentence imposed,” said Johnston County District Attorney Jason Waller. “We are very grateful to the jurors who delivered justice for the victim and her loved ones. We appreciate the professionalism, hard work, and diligence of Detective Jason Linder and the entire Clayton Police Department.”

Gaither was remembered by loved ones as a warm, caring woman devoted to her family and community.
