SMITHFIELD, N.C. – A 76-year-old woman was seriously injured Saturday morning after she was struck by a pickup truck while walking through a downtown Smithfield crosswalk.
The collision was reported around 11:20 a.m. at the intersection of Market Street and Second Street.
Smithfield Police said the woman was walking north through the crosswalk from South Second Street toward North Second Street when she was struck by a pickup driven by a 20-year-old man.
The woman was transported to WakeMed with serious injuries.
Smithfield Police, Smithfield Fire and Johnston County EMS responded to the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by Smithfield Police. Charges are pending.
Police said additional information will be released once the investigation is complete.

The town should face charges and a lawsuit from the victim and the driver for failing to maintain equipment in a timely manner
NCDOT has been trying for YEARS to make improvements to Market Street and has met significant resistance from downtown businesses and the town itself. There were over 600 accidents in this corridor when DOT first presented their proposal for safety improvements a few years ago. Even with all the accidents at the time, the town was reluctant to work with DOT and now a woman has died.
It’s also true that the GPS is routing trucks and drivers through the downtown area because it can be a shortcut. It would be great if someone from the Town, DOT, or the police could figure out a way to stop that. Hopefully the safety improvements that DOT will be making will make Market Street safer for pedestrians as well as the drivers. Please be cautious and patient as these changes are being implemented.
Please enlighten me why the town should face charges. Nobody at fault here but the driver of the vehicle.
Take away the on street parking, and drivers fly through downtown without paying attention to their surroundings. NCDOT is complicit in this accident.
They choice to enforce violations depending on who you are. Those trucks been riding the roads of Smithfield. The Smithfield police department refuse to enforce it.

Yes she passed away early Sunday AM.
