The Highway Patrol says speed and alcohol were factors in a fatal crash on Interstate 40.
The single vehicle accident happened in the eastbound lanes of I-40 at the 309 mile marker near the Johnston-Wake County line around 2:40 AM Saturday.
Jay Kelly Frazee, 23, of Rollingwood Drive, Dunn was operating a 2008 Chevy Tahoe when the SUV veered off the right side of the interstate, went through a shoulder guardrail before striking an embankment and overturning. The SUV struck a support pole attached to an overhead highway sign before coming to rest.
Frazee died as a result of his injuries. Two passenger, Kyle Strickland, 22, and Austin Phillips, 20, both of Coatsberry Village Court, Coats were transported to Wake Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Photos by John Payne
