One Person Killed In Fiery Tractor Trailer Crash

UPDATE 9:30PM May 2 – The deceased driver has been identified as Jason Hedgepath of Florida.

SELMA – One person was killed in a fiery tractor trailer crash Monday morning on Interstate 95 in Johnston County. The single vehicle accident was reported just before 10:00am near the 98.5 mile marker north of Selma and just south of the Rest Area.  

The semi was headed northbound with a load of tomatoes when it suddenly veered off the interstate to the right, collided with a group of trees on the shoulder, then burst into flames as it overturned. Fire units from Selma, Micro, and Pine Level responded to extinguish the burning semi.

One person was found deceased in the wreckage. 

Authorities said the truck was transporting tomatoes from Florida to New York.

The State Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

Heavy traffic delays are reported on I-95 northbound near Selma. Northbound traffic has been reduced to one lane. The roadway is not expected to fully reopen until late-Monday afternoon.  Southbound lanes remain open.
