Fourteen-year-old Zachary “Bud” Harrison of Newton Grove loves drawing, superheroes, and action figures. Like 14 year old kids across the nation, he was excited to start high school in the fall. That was before he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma on June 24th. The news came just one month after his father died. Now Bud’s sister, Emily Harrison, is stepping in to help her brother by raising money on Red Basket, a free crowdfunding website, to help pay for Bud’s medical bills.
On May 23rd, Bud and his family unexpectedly lost their father, Rick Harrison. Rick taught them to live life to the fullest and laugh every day. Soon after his father’s death, Bud became ill. “Before being hospitalized, we were attributing Bud’s symptoms to grief from the loss of our father,” said Bud’s sister, Emily Harrison. One month after Rick’s death, Bud was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The Harrison’s situation is emotionally and financially draining. Many things that were supposed to be taken care of following Rick’s passing had to be put on the back burner, which added to the stress and anxiety of an already overwhelming situation.
That’s why Emily decided to turn to online fundraising on RedBasket.org in hopes of raising $10,000. “The money received will go toward medical bills accrued during Bud’s month long inpatient stay at Duke Medical Center, travel expenses to and from Durham, and the expense of a special school while in the hospital,” Emily said. Every penny donated to Bud will go directly to the Harrisons with zero fees being charged to donors. To support the Harrison family with your tax deductible donation, visit RedBasket.org/569. Their fundraising campaign is titled “Bud’s Battle.”
