UPDATE: 14 Year-Old Drowning Victim Identified

UPDATE: April 27 11:00am – The victim has been identified as Carlos Anthony Reyes of Selma. Carlos was swimming with friends when he went under and drowned. Other youth exited the pond to summon help which later arrived.  

PINE LEVEL – The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the tragic drowning death of a 14 year-old. Around 4:30pm today (Tuesday), first responders were dispatched to a private pond in the 3200 block of US Highway 70 East near Davis Mill Road. The pond was located some distance off the highway.

Authorities said the 14 year-old boy went under water and did not surface. Water rescue teams from Johnston and Wayne counties responded.

A Johnston County sheriff’s K-9 alerted to a location beside the pond. A water rescue team recovered the body not far away.

Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Caldwell said the death is being treated as accidental and no foul play is involved.

The name of the victim has not been released.
