24-Year-Old Marine Dies In Johnston County Motorcycle Accident

BENSON, N.C. — A 24-year-old Four Oaks man was killed Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in southern Johnston County.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 5 p.m. on Wood’s Crossroads Road in the Meadow community.

Troopers said Tyler Shepard was traveling east on a 2020 Ducati motorcycle when he lost control while navigating a curve. The motorcycle ran off the right side of the road, overturned, and struck a mailbox. Shepard was ejected and died at the scene.

Investigators said speed is believed to have been a contributing factor. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected.

The North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene and is assisting with the investigation.

Family members said Shepard was a U.S. Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune and was traveling home for the weekend.

  1. I hate reading stories like this. Such a preventable tragedy, motorcycles are so dangerous. Prayers to his family.

    • Yes, dangerous. But controllable if riden conservatively. Most at fault accidents are caused by those riding beyond their abilities. Please take a Motorcycle Safety Course at your local Community College.
