SMITHFIELD – Eight people sustained injuries in a two car traffic accident in Downtown Smithfield. The accident was reported at 7:19pm Tuesday at the intersection of Market Street (US 70) and Second Street, near the Johnston County Courthouse.
Smithfeld Police said a 1999 Toyota SUV driven by Darwin Antonio of Selma was traveling westbound on Market Street when he failed to stop for a red light at the intersection. The SUV collided with a 2007 Ford passenger car traveling northbound on Second Street, through the intersection. Both vehicles traveled off the roadway, colliding with a NCDOT light pole. The Toyota then overturned on its side.
Antonio and three passengers in the Toyota were injured.
The driver of the Ford, Christopher Michael Doyon of Selma, and three passengers, were also hurt.
Johnston County EMS evaluated all eight people at the accident scene. All the individuals were treated for minor injuries but did not require EMS transport to the hospital.
Darwin Antonio was cited by police for driving without a license and failure to stop at a red light.
Lot of damage for a 25 mph speed limit
That was thanks to the Toyota.
Is the reporter saying that the drivers license was expired or otherwise invalid? Or is the reporter saying this driver was in the country illegally and did not have any documentation?
No license
Sounds like Darwin almost won a Darwin award!
Thank you. This made my wife and I laugh as we were the ones in the Ford.
No matter the cause, Market street is a disaster. Could you imagine being inside the new public bathrooms and there is an accident like this?
