81-Year-Old Driver Cited After Collision With Johnston County School Bus
ARCHER LODGE, N.C. – No injuries were reported Tuesday morning after a passenger car crossed the center line and struck the side of a Johnston County school bus near Archer Lodge, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported around 8:33 a.m. Sept. 8 on Hunter Lane near Percheron Drive.
Authorities said 23 students were aboard Johnston County School Bus 643 at the time of the crash.
A state trooper arrived and found damage along the left side of the school bus and heavy damage to the front left quarter panel of the Toyota passenger car.
Fire and EMS personnel evaluated those involved. No injuries were reported.
The 81-year-old Toyota driver told the trooper the school bus was traveling at a high rate of speed and that she did not see it before striking the side of the bus. Investigators found no evidence to indicate the school bus was speeding.
The bus driver told investigators the Toyota crossed left of center into his lane and struck the bus.
Following the investigation, the Highway Patrol determined the school bus had remained in its lane of travel. Based on the physical evidence and statements from both drivers, investigators concluded the Toyota crossed the center line and struck the bus in an opposite-direction sideswipe collision.
The Toyota driver was cited for driving left of center.
No students, the bus driver or the Toyota driver were injured.

She saw the school bus traveling at a high rate of speed but also didn’t see the school bus before she hit it… LOL ok. Somebody take her license please. Not only are you causing danger to 20+ children, but then at your grown age of 81, you’re also a liar.

Yup… we let them drive. We let them vote, too. It’s time to re-establish IQ and mental fitness tests before allowing *ANYONE* to vote.
Don’t take her license, probably her only way of getting around. She made a mistake bless her heart.
The “mistake” could have ended someone’s life. If she’s unable to drive at that age, she shouldn’t be allowed to. It could be someone else next time.
There are more young inattentive drivers causing accidents than there are older people. Not all old people drive reckless, or have you not been reading the articles up here.
As sad as it is… visual, motor, and cognitive decline at her age is not uncommon. She probably shouldn’t have been driving. The elderly need to utilize JCATS more.
The school bus couldn’t been going at a high rate when it has a governor set. School buses usually set at 35 mph and activity bus set at 45 mph.
That’s a lie cuz I’ve seen them going faster than they should in my area. Definitely not 35 maybe 55. Never the less at 81 it’s time to take her license. I can’t understand why they don’t look into it when it’s older people. I stopped and helped an older lady not that long ago that went off the road and in the ditch, she said she fell asleep. My mother has been in multiple accidents and I can’t get them to take her license.
