90 Acres Under Contract For Two Future Public Schools

WILSON’s MILLS – Johnston County Commissioners approved a request from Johnston County Public Schools to purchase land for two new schools in Wilson’s Mills. Monday night, commissioners voted unanimously to buy 90 acres of land on the north side of Talton Farm Road.

The land is owned by KAT Properties of Johnston County, LLC. The county will pay $30,000 per acre, or a total of $2.7 million, for the property.

School board chairman Todd Sutton said, “The district is planning to acquire the land with the intention of it being a site for the building of a new high school using funds allocated from the 2022 bond referendum. It will take approximately three years total to design and build the new high school, which will ease overcrowding at all high schools either directly or indirectly.”

“The land would also be the site of a newly built middle school, which will be built using funding from a future approved bond referendum and will continue easing overcrowding issues we are currently experiencing and expect to experience over the next few years,” Mr. Sutton stated.

Commissioners and the school board agreed to review the site for opportunities for parks, open spaces, and greenways for the public.

The Board of Education will conduct testing on the 90 acre tract to confirm its suitable prior to closing.

  1. Instead of complaining about who is making money, compare the recent sale of land in the area. Land recently in Wilson Mills area sold for $50,000+ per acre. You people should thank the commissioners for being frugal with our tax dollars. Commissioners don’t have the privilege to take land, but sellers have right to get what they can! It is not just the land but LOCATION as to travel time to get students to school, feeder roads and water sewer. You do have a choice. Move out of Johnston County. Somebody is going to take your place tomorrow!!!

    • Our commissioners in JoCo our only frugal with our tax dollar when it doesn’t benefit them. Remember it’s the JoCo good ol boys, or should I say crooks network.

  2. This 90-acre property was purchased by a private individual (not April Stephens) almost 10 years ago. This person owns at least 12 other properties totaling more than 700 acres in Johnston County.
