Accident Report: Motorcyclist Was Traveling At High Rate Of Speed When Fatal Accident Occurred

SMITHFIELD – The State Highway Patrol has released a four-page accident report which includes new details about a fatal collision last month between a motorcycle and passenger vehicle in front of Walmart.

The accident was reported at 10:47am July 29th on US Highway 301 North (Brightleaf Boulevard) at the entrance to Smithfield Plaza. Brandon Terell Addison, aged 27, of Clayton died in the accident.

The Highway Patrol said Addison was operating his 2008 Honda motorcycle southbound on US Highway 301 North and struck the front right side of a 2008 Jeep SUV traveling northbound and attempting to make a left turn into Smithfield Plaza. Addison was ejected and died at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep, Bertha Baker Hocutt, age 79, of Four Oaks was injured and transported to Wake Med in Raleigh.

According to the accident report by Trooper W.W. Main, a Smithfield police officer had previously clocked the motorcycle at a high rate of speed on a nearby roadway, Durwood Stephenson Parkway, and had attempted to overtake the motorcycle. However, the police officer discontinued the attempted takeover prior to the collision, the report stated.

Troopers estimated Addison was traveling at 80 mph at the time his motorcycle struck the Jeep. The Jeep was traveling approximately 10 mph. The posted speed limit is 35 mph on that section of US Highway 301.

No charges were filed.
