Buies Creek – UNC Asheville scored five in the top of the ninth to top Campbell 11-9 Sunday at Jim Perry Stadium.
The Bulldogs moved to 17-23 overall and 7-8 in Big South games with the win, while Campbell fell to 18-22 on the season and 6-9 in conference play. Asheville took the Big South series, also claimingFriday’s opener 10-5. Campbell won Saturday’s contest 9-7.
Campbell led 7-6 heading into the ninth inning after scoring a combined six runs over the seventh and eighth.
Trailing 6-1, the Camels scored four in the seventh, loading the bases before Matthew Barefoot and Drew Butler scored on consecutive wild pitches. Cole Hallum followed with a RBI groundout and Bryce Myers’ brought CU within a run at 6-5 with a RBI double.
In the eighth, Christian Jones led off with a walk and with two out, Drew Butler reached on an error. Jeff Hahs followed with a two-run single, giving Campbell the 7-6 lead.
With runners on second and third with none out in the top of the ninth, Tanner Bush tied it up for Asheville with a RBI bunt single, and Carmine Pagano put the Bulldogs back in front with another base hit. A Campbell error scored two more runs, and Justin Woods’ sacrifice fly made it 11-7 Asheville.
Campbell threatened again in the bottom of the ninth, with Christian Jones driving in two on a two out double, but the rally fell short.
Eric Whitecavage (3-0) earned the win in relief, allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits with a strikeout and a walk in 1 2/3 innings.
Asheville starter Joe Zayatz pitched the first, allowed a hit. Brandon Harris allowed four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 5 2/3. Kole Harris surrendered two runs, one earned, on two hits with a walk in 2/3 of an inning.
Wyatt Tyson (1-3) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. CU starter Ryan Kirk allowed four runs, one earned, on four hits with a strikeout and three walks.
Joe Tietjen and Carmine Pagano both drove in two for the Bulldogs, with Danny Wilson scoring three times, going 1-for-2 with four walks.
Hahs went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run to lead the Camels, Hallum and Jones added two RBI, while Butler scored three times, going 1-for-4.
The Camels will host UNCW on Tuesday, April 25 before heading to North Carolina on Wednesday, April 26.
