Authorities: $1,600 In Unauthorized Charges Leads To Arrest

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A 30-year-old Smithfield woman has been arrested on charges of financial card fraud and identity theft.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said Kayla Elizabeth Coates, of Stevens Chapel Road, was taken into custody March 26 following an investigation.

According to an arrest warrant, Coates is accused of using a debit card belonging to an acquaintance without permission between October and December 2025.

Authorities said the unauthorized transactions totaled approximately $1,673 and included money transfers, food purchases, hotel stays and transportation expenses.

The incident was reported to the sheriff’s office Dec. 29, 2025.
