A Benson woman was critically injured in a rear-end collision in a work zone on Highway 50 north of Benson at 4:03pm Friday.
The Highway Patrol said 29 year-old Melissa Danielle Raub was traveling southbound on Highway 50 near Stephenson Road in her 2015 Toyota passenger car when she ran into the back of a stopped 2008 Sterling utility truck operated by Giovani Paul Mendez-Hornelas, 32, of Angier.
Raub was traveling at an estimated 55 miles per hour in her Toyota when she struck the truck that had come to a complete stop in the travel lane due to a construction vehicle ahead. According to an accident report by Trooper H.D. Nazal, there was a construction worker with a stop and slow sign in the roadway and the sign was being displayed at the time of the crash.
Raub was rushed to Wake Medical Center where she was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon. Mendez-Hornelas was not injured.
Damage to the Toyota was estimated at $25,000. Damage to the Sterling truck was placed at $2,500.
