Bid Awarded For Design Of Cleveland High Expansion

SMITHFIELD – Johnston County Schools has awarded a $365,000 bid to design additional classrooms space at Cleveland High School. A bid was awarded to Hite Associates from Greenville, NC to provide the services. Six companies had submitted bids for the design work.

To assist the school system with the cost, Johnston County Commissioners agreed in January 2024 to pay for the design portion of the project.

The bid includes $350,000 for services, plus $15,000 for postage, shipping, and advertising, and bid permitting costs.

Cleveland High is currently 536 students over capacity with 22 mobile classrooms in use to help with the overcrowding. The new addition will add 18 general classrooms, four science labs, two vocational classrooms, bathrooms, and support areas.

  1. 18 classrooms does not seem to be enough? 18 classrooms times 25 students is 450. I know I’m a JoCo product so help me with the math. It seems the addition needs to be larger than 18 classrooms unless they are planning to realign the boundaries.

  2. How about re-drawing the attendance lines to alleviate crowding? Oh that’s right. It makes too much sense, saves money, and might make mommy and daddy upset.
