Buies Creek – Campbell’s baseball team defeated the Czech Republic National Team 10-3 in an exhibition matchup at Jim Perry Stadium Monday evening.
Following two runs in the top of the second, Campbell kept the Czech squad off the scoreboard until the ninth inning. Kevin Barron cranked a two-run homer to left field to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second.
Following a 45 minute rain delay in the middle of the third, the Camels put a run on the board in all of the remaining innings except the sixth. A three-run home run by Joe Zirolli in the bottom of the fifth broke things open and put CU ahead 8-2.
Matthew Barefoot went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Jeff Hahs was 1-for-3 and drove home Barefoot in the top of the third inning on a double and later scored a run in the eighth.
Kevin Barron recorded a hit and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Zach Minnick also recorded a RBI on a base knock.
Joey Scarcic earned the win with a strikeout in an inning of work on the mound. Phil Simpson retired nine of 10 batters he faced with three strikeouts. Alex Yarem also had three punch outs and issued only one walk.
Adam Hajtmar had two hits for the Czech side. Starter Boris Bojak took the loss with two earned runs allowed.
The international exhibition was one of the highlights of the Camels’ fall schedule. The game was played with wood bats.
