Clayton Police quickly called off a car chase on Wednesday night after a 911 call described a possible theft suspect leaving the Gold’s Gym on US 70 Business West in Clayton.
As officers pulled in the parking lot the suspect was speeding away toward the Wake County line on 70. But because the 911 caller and those on the scene had very limited information about what was going on, the pursuit was cancelled.
Officers later learned the suspect had removed numerous sets of keys from a board inside Gold’s Gym. While those members exercised, the suspect was able to get into several of their cars and go through the vehicles for valuables.
Officers are still putting together exactly how many cars were broken into and what was taken. As is routine any time officers are involved in a pursuit, Clayton Police will do an internal review of the incident.
Witnesses reported seeing the car speed away in excess of 100 mph on US70 into Wake County. The pursuit was ended at the Wake-Johnston County line.
