WILSON’S MILLS – Both westbound US 70 lanes were temporarily closed just after 10:00am Monday due to a single vehicle accident near Strickland Road.

The driver slammed into the end of a newly installed guardrail causing her heavily damaged car to spin down the road, leaving it sideways across both lanes.

All of the car’s airbags deployed and the driver was uninjured.

Significant traffic delays were reported before the westbound lanes could reopen.

Wilson’s Mills Police, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, State Highway Patrol, Wilson’s Mill Fire, and Johnston County EMS responded to the work zone accident.

  1. I can’t believe that more people aren’t complaining about how dangerous and poorly designed the temporary road is on 70 going through Wilson’s Mills. The final product on some of the repairs and newer roads are worse than what was previously in some places. Buffalo Road had a creek tunnel replaced a couple of years ago and it’s like a roller coaster ride when traveling over it. The four-way at 42 and 96 looks like a 3rd grade school project. I bet when 70 is complete it will be worse than before as well, with the current record. I see roads built all over eastern N.C that are smooth, don’t hold water when it rains and don’t throw your vehicle from side to side when traveling on them. Why is the DOT allowing such poor work? And how many people have been injured or killed from poor temporary traffic designs? Anyone?

    • I agree, Ed. Poor work! There is a recently completed turning land into a subdivision on Hwy 50 near Elevation road that has new paving and it will throw your vehicle from side to side. The old pavement before and past this is much smoother.

  2. So much for the DOT making the road safer during construction. As Ed Freeman says, the roads are in worse shape now. I do not think the DOT did a thing to make it safer but on the other hand cars speeding thru the work zone does not help. I have seen people that think it is the AutoBond in Germany. Be safe, be alive and DOT DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM NOW!

  3. Maybe people should drive slower in construction zones. It’s completely unsafe for the workers, as well as drivers. Make it 35mph. Be considerate of other drivers and don’t be “that guy” who has to be in front of everyone else and cut off people at the last minute. We can all work together to make it a safer area, even with the current design. Drive slower!

  4. Perhaps maybe it’s not a DOT problem, but more of drivers looking at their cell phone and not paying attention to the road problem? Just a thought.
