A Smithfield homeowner had a rude awakening after a car struck the corner bedroom of his home where he was sleeping.
The accident happened at 5:06am Thursday on Highway 210 at Swift Creek Road just west of Smithfield.
The NC Highway Patrol said a 2014 Dodge Charger was traveling on Swift Creek Road when it failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 210. The car went through the T-intersection, and continued 275 feet striking a tree then the corner of the residence of Franklin Watson at 2267 Highway 210.
The HVAC units at the home were heavily damaged and a hole was knocked in the foundation. Damage to the residence was estimated at $30,000. No one in the home was hurt.
The driver of the car, Allen Douglas Hughes of Clayton, was not injured but he was charged by Trooper N.A. Hocutt with failure to stop at a stop sign. Damage to the Dodge was estimated at $1,000.
