Clayton Engineering Director Earns Industry Recognition

CLAYTON, N.C. – The Town of Clayton’s Engineering Director Jonathan Ham earns recognition as the 2026 Government Engineer of the Year from the Triangle Chapter of Professional Engineers of North Carolina.
The chapter presented the award during a reception in Raleigh. It celebrates licensed engineers working in government roles who demonstrate strong leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to serving the public. Judges also consider professional ethics, continuing education and efforts that help protect public health and safety.
As Clayton’s engineering director, Ham oversees capital projects involving streets, utilities, stormwater systems and other public infrastructure across Town. His department provides technical expertise and engineering support for several municipal departments while helping manage projects that keep public services operating safely and reliably.
Although much of the work happens behind the scenes, municipal engineering plays an important role in everyday life throughout the community. Town Manager Rich Cappola said Ham’s approach to leadership reflects the same level of care and collaboration that guides the department’s work.
“Jonathan never looks for recognition or attention,” said Cappola. “He stays focused on supporting the people around him, solving problems thoughtfully, and making sure projects move forward in a way that best serves residents. That steady leadership is one of the many reasons this honor is so well deserved.”
The Government Engineer of the Year distinction carries special meaning because fellow engineers select the recipient. The award reflects the respect of professionals who understand the complexity and responsibility involved in public infrastructure work.
“Engineering is a team effort, and no project succeeds without people who are willing to listen, work together and stay focused on solving problems,” said Ham. “I’m grateful to work alongside people who care deeply about serving others and making a positive difference for Clayton residents.”
The Triangle Chapter is part of Professional Engineers of North Carolina, a statewide organization that promotes high standards in engineering and public service through professional development, collaboration and advocacy.
