CLAYTON – The Town of Clayton has hired Conrad Olmedo as its new Planning Director.
Olmedo, who served the past three years as the Planning Manager for the City of Burlington, brings with him 17 years of local government planning experience. He is replacing former Planning Director Ben Howell who resigned from the position in August.
“Conrad is an excellent current and long-range planner with years of experience working with local governments across the country.” said Clayton Town Manager Rich Cappola. “He has come to Clayton at a critical time as we continue to manage growth and its demand on Town services. I know that he will be a valuable resource to our staff and community.”
Prior to joining the Town of Clayton Planning Department, Olmedo spent four years with the City of Burlington, six years with the City of Colorado Springs Planning Department, and nearly five years with the Town of Apple Valley in California. He officially began his new role with Clayton on Oct. 30.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining the team at the Town of Clayton as the new Planning Director. With the roll-out of a new Unified Development Code and an online permitting process, the Town is in a great position to meet tomorrow’s growth challenges,” said Olmedo. “My experience in Burlington has prepared me to implement these new projects and refine them as we go along.”
Olmedo is a 2002 graduate of California State University, where he majored in geography. In 2012 he earned a Master of Public Administration from University of La Verne in California, and in 2018 he received a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Colorado Denver.
According to Olmedo, his goal as the planning director is to maintain Clayton’s character while meeting the pressures of growth and development.
“Through excellent planning and common sense, we can both honor our past and keep true to our vision for our future,” he said. “How we perform in the Planning Department in this respect is going to be my number one metric of success as a planning director.”
Conrad, quit allowing massive housing developments. Our infrastructure can’t handle it. Too many cars, too few schools, too few police, too few fire departments, too little water, too little electric. Stop stop stop

I’m sorry, WHY are we hiring someone from CA for our historic small town??
Just what Clayton needs, another transplant making decision. They should have hire someone actually from Clayton or at the vey least Johnston County or North Carolina. We are sick and tired of these transplants making decision that have destroyed our community, killed our wildlife and crimpled our environment. I’m sure he’s ready to approve more crap built subdivision from out-of-state developers with square footage for lots.
More proof that the people making these decisions could care less about what their community thinks or how it will affect them. It’s all about the almighty dollar. The beauty of Clayton is its small town appeal and history. I pray he has some sense about him and can recognize this.
