At the last minute, the Smithfield Town Council tabled action on possible demolition of the old Water Treatment Plant after a potential buyer emerged.
Tuesday night, the Council was expected to review bids for the project. But during a public comments section, one citizen said they had interest in buying the building, keeping the original appearance if possible, and turning the site into a brewery.
Councilman Perry Harris, who had asked in August for town officials to seek demolition bids, agreed to postpone any action for 60 days until the interested party inspects the property then makes the town an offer.
Two bids submitted for the demolition and debris removal ranged from $85,000 to $94,280.
