CLAYTON — Johnston County welcomed one of its first babies of 2026 just hours into the New Year.
A baby girl was born at UNC Health Johnston in Clayton at 1:51 a.m. on Jan. 1, becoming the Clayton hospital’s first newborn of the year.
Austin and Makayla Helm began 2026 with the arrival of their daughter, Joanna Mae, marking an exciting milestone for the family.

Congratulations to this couple but this NOT the first baby in Johnston County … Elison Jude smith was born at JMH Smithfield at 12:30am. Should double check your facts

The first baby in Johnston County was Elison Jude Smith 6lbs 5ozs born at 12:34 am on January 1st in Smithfield to Morgan Adams and Daniel Smith.
Neither one of you actually read and comprehended what was said in this article that sweet little girl was the first baby born at JMH-CLAYTON…and baby Smith was the first one born at JMH-SMITHFIELD….get a grip y’all….two precious little ones were born into this crazy world.

That is because the article was edited after the comments were made. It originally stated the baby girl in Clayton was the 1st baby in the county. They are doing their best to correct the article and give both families well deserved congratulations.
However, these births are a wonderful blessing for both the Clayton and Smithfield families.
Who CARES who was first? Geez. Some Karen family members!
