DUNN – An Angier man injured in a gunfight that killed a Benson man in 2020 was sentenced to serve five to seven years in prison for the man’s death.

. Zachary Tyler Johnson

Zachary Tyler Johnson, 26, of Raeford Road, submitted an Alford plea of guilt to voluntary manslaughter for the May 23 shooting death of 31-year-old Montice Williams. With the Alford plea, Johnson maintained his innocence but admitted the prosecution had enough evidence to lead to a guilty verdict if taken to trial.

Both men were found shot at a home on Cater Lane in Shawtown around 4:06 p.m. May 23, 2020. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson was rushed to the hospital.

He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder four days later.

On Dec. 14, Harnett County Superior Court Judge Winston Gilchrist sentenced Johnson to prison with credit for the 65 days he served in jail before trial.

  1. It is a da*n shame, this mans life is only worth 5 to 7 years. There is something seriously wrong with the sentencing structure within the courts, when DWI’S and drug charges carry longer sentencing than murder.

  2. It’s ridiculous you kill somebody and only get 5-7 years but get 100 years for dwi and drug possession never once harmed anyone else! Make it make sense!

  3. What an outrage that you can kill a person and get off with 5 lousy years but you can get caught with a joint and spend 15 to 20!
