Hit and run vehicle located in parking lot of Clayton apartment complex
CLAYTON – An anonymous tip led state troopers to the parking lot of the Amelia Station apartment complex in Clayton Thursday night. Troopers had been looking for a blue Volkswagen Jetta that struck and killed a moped operator on the Highway 70 Clayton Bypass at 1:28am that morning. Steven Mark Ferguson, 57, of Raleigh was riding his red moped eastbound on the Bypass when he was struck from behind and killed. The Volkswagen did not stop at the scene.
Troopers said they located the blue Volkswagen in the rear of the apartment complex. The car had damage to its right front bumper and quarter panel consistent with the hit and run collision. There was also red paint on the hood that reportedly matched the color of the moped.
About an hour after the vehicle was discovered, troopers said they located the owner of the hit and run vehicle, 45 year-old Alan Ray Price. Troopers said they were able to determine Price was driving his car at the time of the fatal collision. He was charged with felony hit and run resulting in the death of Steven Ferguson. Price was taken to the Johnston County Jail and held on a $50,000 secured bond. The Volkswagen was seized by the State Highway Patrol.
