The Highway Patrol has released the name of a driver killed in a high speed car crash on Monday in the 6700 block of Buffalo Road near Live Oak Church Road, north of Selma.
A trooper was traveling northbound on Buffalo Road around 11:34am and observed a southbound Nissan Maxima traveling at a high rate of speed. The trooper turned around and attempted to overtake the Nissan but lost sight of the car just before the crash occurred.
Troopers said Michael Willis Pounds, 30, of Clayton lost control of the Nissan in a curve, traveled off the roadway and overturned. Pounds was ejected from the car and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A passenger, Amanda Renee Pate, 29, of Selma was transported by ambulance to Wake Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The Highway Patrol said high speed contributed to the collision.
