Driver, Passenger Arrested On DWI Charges

A drunk driving suspect and his passenger were both arrested during a traffic stop Saturday night on Highway 242 South of Benson.  Around 10:10pm, a sheriff’s patrol deputy stopped a pickup for weaving in the travel lane on Highway 242 about 5 miles south of Benson.  When the driver opened the car door authorities said several beer cans fell onto the pavement.

Donnie Ray Campbell, 55, of Stedman, NC was charged with driving while impaired, driving on a revoked license, and possession of an open container of alcohol.  Campbell registered 0.28 on the Breathalyzer, more than three times above the legal limit of 0.08.

A passenger, Darrell Scott Naylor, 51, of Roseboro, reportedly told deputies he owned the truck Campbell was driving and asked him to drive because he was too drunk.  Naylor was charged with aiding and abetting DWI and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.

Naylor was held under a $1,500 bond. Campbell was jailed in lieu of $5,000 bail.
