SMITHFIELD – The NC Department of Transportation completed emergency repairs ahead of schedule at the intersection of Swift Creek Road and US 70 Business. All lanes reopened Friday afternoon.
Around 6:00pm Thursday, a dump truck with its bed in the upright position traveled through the intersection knocking down wires that suspended the traffic signals at the busy intersection, just west of Smithfield. The driver never stopped.
Swift Creek Road was closed at the intersection for safety, and one lane was closed in each direction on US 70, while the NCDOT made repairs to the traffic signals.
The Highway Patrol said the driver of the dump truck, Leonardo Jose Delgado Gonzalez, age 32, of Clayton returned to scene sometime later in another vehicle. Gonzalez was charged with hit and run causing property damage and a vehicle height violation.
He should have to reimburse the state for all cost involved. Taxpayers should not have to pay for his stupidity!
Taxpayers always pay for stupid people. It what makes them stupid. If they had to pay themself they wouldn’t be so stupid.
The truck drivers insurance will reinburse the state.
