MEADOW – A rural Johnston County church was damaged by flames. It happened at the Trinity Baptist Church at 7538 NC 50 South, Benson, in the Meadow community.
The pastor had gone to the church Wednesday morning to work in the office. He smelled smoke, went to investigate, and located the fire. He immediately called 911.
Meadow firefighters arrived to find flames in the ceiling and attic area above the sanctuary.
The Meadow Fire Department is credited with saving the church due to their quick response time. Surrounding departments from Johnston and Sampson counties also responded to the scene.
The Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
No injuries were reported.
This is not the first time fire has impacted Trinity Baptist Church. In the late 1980’s the church parsonage was heavily damaged by fire.
