Deputies were trying to serve a mental health involuntary commitment order on the individual
LILLINGTON – The NC State Bureau of Investigation has been requested to investigate a deadly officer involved shooting. It happened at 238 Capital Hill Road in Harnett County during the service of a mental health involuntary commitment order.
According to a news release, the Harnett County 911 Center received a call at 8:17am Monday from a family member and friend reporting an individual at the address was having an alleged mental episode.
A deputy responded and spoke with the family member and friend and advised them to speak with a magistrate about the incident. An involuntary commitment order was then secured by a family member.
Deputies arrived at the address to attempt service and take custody of the individual. Authorities said that’s when a firearm was pointed in the direction of deputies by the individual, which resulted in deputies using deadly force and killing the individual. Paramedics responded and confirmed the person was deceased at the scene.
The State Bureau of Investigation will investigate the incident, which is standard protocol for all officer-involved shootings.
In a statement Sheriff Wayne Coats said, “First, we want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with the decedent’s family and friends. The loss of human life under circumstances such as this is tragic. I would also ask that you keep our deputies and their families in your thoughts and prayers. This is something we all train for and while we know it may happen, we hope it never does.”
The names of the deceased and deputies involved with be released at a later date.
