A woman was pinned inside her car following a head-on collision Friday afternoon on Brogden Road about four miles east of Smithfield.
The collision between the large truck and compact car was reported at4:45pm.
Initial reports indicate the driver of a red sedan was traveling westbound on Brogden Road towards Smithfield when she ran off the roadway, over-corrected, traveled through a ditch, struck a driveway culvert and went airborne for about 50 feet. When the car landed it skidded into the path of a delivery truck.
The driver of the car was pinned in the wreckage for nearly an hour before being cut free by crews from the Brogden and Smithfield Fire Departments.
A Duke Life Flight helicopter landed in a field near the accident scene to airlift the badly injured woman to a trauma center. Johnston County deputies diverted traffic around the scene for nearly two hours until Brogden Road was reopened.
