Highway Patrol Releases Information On Hit & Run Vehicle, Identifies Cyclist Fatally Struck

SMITHFIELD – The State Highway Patrol has released new information about a fatal hit and run crash that killed a Johnston County man. The collision happened at 10:47pm Thursday, May 11 on Braswell Road, near W.C. Braswell Road, east of Smithfield.

Christopher Wayne Aycock of Selma was riding his bicycle on a dark stretch of the rural two-lane road when he was struck from behind and ejected. Aycock died at the scene. The vehicle that struck the 53 year-old man never stopped.

A witness to the collision identified the hit and run vehicle as a dark color small SUV. Vehicle parts recovered at the scene indicated the vehicle is a dark blue metallic 2011-2013 Kia Sorrento. The Kia will have right front damage concentrating around the passenger side headlight area, the Highway Patrol said.
