Authorities are investigating a shooting incident at a Smithfield area home.
Around 2:30pm Tuesday, a 39 year-old man said he was awakened by the sound of a noise outside his residence on Serenity Drive off Cleveland Road just west of Smithfield. The man also said his dog began barking.
The victim said as he was getting out of bed to investigate he heard another noise. He then spotted a man peering through the glass in his back door.
The victim said he retrieved a gun and fired the weapon through his rear door until he ran out of bullets. The man standing at the rear door fled.
Johnston County deputies responded to the scene. Officers said there was no evidence indicating the individual was hit by the gunfire. There was no evidence the individual attempted to pry open the back door.
Numerous law enforcement officers searched the area looking for the individual described as a young black male, 6 foot 1, with short hair, wearing black shirt and dark jeans. He was never located.
Cash, Jewelry Taken During Break-In
In an unrelated incident, deputies are investigating a break-in at a home in the 13000 block of Buffalo Road near Clayton. The break-in occurred Tuesday between 10:00am and 6:00pm.
The victim said while they were away from home someone broke in and stole cash and jewelry valued at $2,500.
The suspect also ransacked the residence.
