Johnston County Businesses Earn New State Tourism Recognition

BENSON, N.C. — Two businesses in Benson are among dozens across the state recently recognized by the North Carolina Department of Commerce as Certified North Carolina Destination Businesses, a designation aimed at encouraging tourism and strengthening small businesses.

The Benson businesses recognized include Small World Travel and Tours and the Gift Shop and Travel Store, both located at 201-A E. Main Street, which were among 72 businesses across the state to receive the designation through a program launched last year by the North Carolina Main Street & Rural Planning Center.

The initiative helps small businesses transform their storefronts into destination-style experiences designed to attract both residents and visitors.

“North Carolina small businesses are the heartbeat of our economy,” said Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley in a statement. “These businesses have embraced innovation and storytelling to become magnets for residents and visitors alike.”

Businesses that participated in the program completed specialized training led by national destination development firm The Schallert Group. The workshops focused on strategies to help small businesses stand out in competitive markets through unique products, immersive experiences and storytelling.

State officials say the goal is to turn locally owned businesses into anchors for tourism and economic development.

The program began in 2025 with 33 businesses and has now expanded to 72 participating locations across North Carolina, from the mountains to the coast.

Several other businesses in eastern North Carolina were also recognized, including Banks Bed and Breakfast in Garner and Artisan Leaf, WhirliDogs Café and Training Center, and Wilson Paint and Wallpaper Center in Wilson.

Funding for the workshops and related tourism initiatives came through a federal Outdoor Recreation, Travel and Tourism grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.

The North Carolina Main Street program, which coordinates the effort, is part of the national Main Street America network, which focuses on revitalizing historic downtown districts and strengthening local economies.

State officials say businesses that earn the designation offer visitors a distinctive experience that encourages people to travel to the community, explore local shops and return again.
