Charges Filed In Crash That Injured Johnston County Deputy

BENSON – The State Highway Patrol has charged the driver of a pickup truck with failure to yield at a stop sign and driving without a license following a two-vehicle accident that injured a Johnston County sheriff’s detective.

The collision was reported around 3:30pm Wednesday, on NC Highway 242 South at Wood’s Crossroads Road, near Benson.

According to state troopers, a white Ford F-250 pickup traveling westbound on Wood’s Crossroads Road, failed to yield at stop sign, and was attempting to make a left turn within the intersection. The pickup collided with an unmarked Dodge Charger patrol car, traveling northbound on NC Highway 242.

After the impact, the pickup ran off the roadway into a corn field. The patrol car came to rest in the edge of the parking lot at Mac’s General Merchandise.

The sheriff’s detective was transported to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, the Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the pickup was treated at the scene by Johnston County EMS but declined transport to the hospital.

The Highway Patrol said speed and impairment are not suspected in the crash.

The NC Department of Transportation responded to replace a stop sign downed during the collision.

Meadow Fire, Johnston County EMS, and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident scene.
