In September of 2020 the Johnston County Board of Commissioners purchased property in the Cleveland community at the corner of Matthews Road and Polenta Road. The land was designated for development as part of the Parks, Greenways and Open Space program making the 70-plus acre parcel the first parkland purchase in the County’s history.
Last week, the County was awarded $500,000 in federal funding from the Land and Water Conservation fund. The federal funding will be in addition to a $500,000 grant the County received from the state through the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund.
The funds will help offset the $1.6 million purchase price of the parkland property and leave roughly $600,000 tax dollars invested in the County’s first, dedicated open space property.
The process of shaping the master plan for the parkland will begin early next year.
