Jury Duty Scams On The Increase, Local Man Falls Victim

JOHNSTON COUNTY – A 31 year-old Johnston County man lost a large sum of money after falling for a jury duty scam.

The victim said he received an early morning phone call from a person claiming to be with “US District Court.” The caller demanded to know why they did not show up for jury duty in federal court.

The victim was told by the scammer they would be arrested unless they paid $10,500 to avoid going to jail.

The victim withdrew cash from his bank then deposited the money into a BitCoin ATM.

After the man realized he had been defrauded he reported the incident to authorities.

  1. Who pays bills with Bit Coin. This is happening to many times. I simply just don’t have any pity for these people. Come on, when has anyone ever paid a bill collector with bit coin or gift cards.

  2. 31 yrs old? He should’ve known better. No government agency uses Bitcoin. He will never see that money again. It is untraceable.

  3. Lock me up! Before I pay a someone on the phone that kind of money to avoid going to jail, I am first going to call the court and verify. And, if you don’t show up the judge then issues a warrant for you arrest, not a phone call. At 31 yo he should know better!!
