Local Hero: Police Officer Quickly Extinguishes Fire Inside Business
SMITHFIELD – A Smithfield police officer was the hero of the day at the Chicken Barn on Market Street.
At 6:32am today (Tuesday), employees reported a fire in the kitchen at popular restaurant while most Smithfield firefighters were still on the scene of an early morning residential house fire.
Wilson’s Mills and Selma firefighters began rushing to the scene.
Smithfield Police Officer Thornton was nearby, heard the radio call, and quickly arrived on the scene. He used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze and prevent it from spreading.
Fire units arrived to find that Officer Thornton had already extinguished the blaze.
Police Chief Pete Hedrick said, “I’m very proud of the men and women of the Smithfield Police Department and the service they provide to the community. Today, Officer Thornton’s quick response help a local business and safe guarded our community. Thank you for your service.”
Officer Thornton has been on the police force about two years.
The Chicken Barn is expected to reopen on Wednesday.
