The next event of the Max G. Creech Selma Historical Museum will a tribute to the life and legacy of General George C. Marshall. The Event titled “General George C. Marshall: Citizen, Soldier and Statesman” will focus on the life and legacy of the General, who was Chief of Staff during World War Two, Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense under President Harry Truman and Nobel Peace Prize Winner in 1953.
“This program which is being held on Veteran’s Day – the 99th Anniversary of the ending of World War I – will be focusing on General Marshall’s public and private life”, states Eric Jackson the event presenter.
“General Marshall is such a huge figure in the 20th century yet he remains someone who few people know,” Jackson told WTSB. “I grew up in Leesburg, Virginia which was where General Marshall and his wife and family lived from 1941until his death in 1959. He was a neighbor to all and did not want to be treated special.”
The program will deal with his ups and downs, the tragic death of his first wife, the death of his step-son during World War II and the stresses of being the Chief of Staff during World War II and the early Cold War period of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.
“I want to invite all Veterans and their families, young people and students of history to this special event. “We will have a tribute to our veterans before the program” says, Jackson.
The Program will begin at 11:00am this Saturday November 11th.
