New Roundabout Coming To Wayne County Crossroads
MOUNT OLIVE – A $2.9 million contract awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation this week will bring a new roundabout to a key Mount Olive intersection.
The single-lane roundabout will replace the all‑way stop installed in 2021 as a temporary safety measure while funding, design work, and right‑of‑way acquisition were completed. The upgrade will occur at N.C. 55 and Indian Springs Road.
Legion Asphalt Inc. of Wallace is expected to begin construction in January after utilities are relocated, and finish by early summer 2028.
Periodic detours will be needed throughout the work. NCDOT will share those updates on its traveler information website, DriveNC.gov, and the contractor will post detour information on message boards in the project area. A full closure of the intersection for about 21 days will also be required to safely complete critical phases of construction.
As part of this project, the intersection of Indian Springs Road and North Church Street will be converted into an all-way stop for improved safety.
The improvement is primarily supported by the federal Carbon Reduction Program, which aims to curb engine idling and lower carbon emissions.
Roundabouts offer strong safety benefits statewide, reducing crashes by 46% and lowering fatalities and injuries by 76%. Their circular layout slows vehicles to about 15 mph and requires drivers to yield to traffic already in the roundabout.
